Our volunteers must be able to work independently and enthusiastically within the guidelines of the project. We look for our volunteers to have patience when working with the children, with the reminder that perseverance does not only benefit the children, but you yourself. We look for volunteers who can bring new ideas and different skills to our community. We do not look for age or gender, just the willingness to understand a different culture and look to how we can make a positive impression on these children's' lives.
Other projects Volunteers Village is involved in:
Project NSSH - Neth Savan Sarana Hostel
You can work at the NSSH located in Ahangama town. There are over forty deaf children, and four blind kids living and learning at these location. Skills in art, craft, horticulture, carpentry, cooking and ICT. These can be developed with the help of volunteers and ultimately, give these children the vocational background and skills useful for their future.
Project HOPE Schools - ICT, English & Child Development Life Skills Support in Rural Schools
You can work with different schools located in rural areas of the Southern province. The majority of these Schools have little ICT facilities or English teachers for this equipment to be used effectively. This is a good opportunity for teachers as this allows volunteers to experience child development and practice their own teaching techniques. The Sri Lankan school system would benefit greatly from any volunteer assistance.
There are lots of rural schools which do not have enough water/toilet facilities. If a volunteer would like to donate towards this, or simply invest their time whilst in Sri Lanka we could make this their own individual project.
SPDA - Southern Province Deaf Association
SPDA is a non-governmental organization which trains deaf youths through sign language, computing, carpentry, art and craft, batik and much more to help develop their skills. This allows them to gain qualifications and the potential to start their own business or work in government factories. Volunteers are invaluable in assisting the learning process towards these children as they give confidence to the youths and can be extremely helpful in the teaching process.
